Jerry Seinfeld on Saturday Night Live

This is what Jerry Seinfeld’s career looks like. Really?

We know following up the success of one of the biggest hit TV series of all time isn’t easy. So we overlooked the long absence from showbiz as a period of regrouping. Then we forgave The Bee Movie as the rebound project.

We caught a glimmer of hope in last Fall’s Seinfeld-mini reunion on Curb Your Enthusiasm. It was especially great to see Jerry being Jerry and a special treat to get what felt like a real behind the scenes glimpse of the Seinfeld-David dynamic.

But the latest wave of Seinfeld entertainment offerings seemed like it was going to be a total train wreck. First, came the oh-so ‘80s feeling (not in a good way), stunt-casted, and forced relationship show, The Marriage Ref. Sorry, we don’t really want to watch Madonna taking out her pent up man issues on Larry David and Ricky Gervais. Awkward.

Then, his appearance as co-host on Live with Regis and Kelly. When did this become a legitimate career move for big stars like Jerry and Anderson Cooper. What’s next traffic reports and Weather Channel specials?

But Jerry redeemed himself once again on SNL’s Weekend Update where he joined Seth Meyers for the always funny segment, Really!?! with Seth and Jerry. Rather than cover a number of topics, they stuck to one the Eric Massa groping scandal. Chock full of tickle fight and Village People references, it’s without a doubt one of the funniest segments on SNL this season and certainly the highlight of Jerry’s 2010 work.

Stick with what you know and what you’re good at Jerry – observational stand-up humor. Really.
