Most Mary Tyler Moore fans know she's a very active animal advocate and this past weekend she proved it once again by hosting the Broadway Barks Fundraiser. She and co-host Bernadette Peters came to Shubert Alley to present dogs and cats available for adoption from New York City animal shelters.
On hand at the event were other Broadway stars including Sean Hayes, Tony Shaloub, Brooke Adams, Corbin Bleu, Cheyenne Jackson, and Richard Thomas. Moore and Peters started Broadway Barks as a way to promote animal adoption and foster a feeling of community among the various shelters and rescue groups.
When Mary isn't rescing animals, she still acts occasionally. Most know her for her title role in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and movies like Ordinary People. But we will always remember her first as Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show. In this interview for the Archive of American Television, she talks about begin cast as Laura early in her career.
