Pregnancy Isn’t Slowing Down Project Runway’s Georgina Chapman

Georgina Chapman has it all. After a successful stint as a model, she teamed with her Chelsea College of Art and Design classmate, Keren Craig, to launch the Marchesa fashion line. These days she’s a judge on Project Runway: All Stars and on December 20, Lifetime will air a half-hour special about her company, Project Runway Spotlight: Marchesa.

To top it all off Georgina is married to media mogul Harvey Weinstein. Despite their 24-year age difference, the couple has a two-year-old daughter, India, and another baby on the way.

In a recent conference call interview she talked about balancing her personal life and career. Georgina explained, “I make sure I carve out time to be with my daughter. She’s my number one priority, my family.”

That includes including her little girl in her daily duties. “India comes into the office with me most days. She has her little area with a desk and everything where she draws… I leave later in the mornings now and spend the mornings with her. So I do see her. She spends a lot of time with me at work.”

Of course that will have to change when India is a little older, “I don’t know how that’s going to work once she’s at school. I’m going to miss her. It’s going to be hard.”

Luckily Georgina will have a new bundle of joy to share her time with. But carrying another child hasn’t slowed her down. “I sometimes feel I’m most creative when I’m pregnant. I guess because I am physically creating at the same time. I just keep going. The show must go on.”

It isn’t always easy to plow through her workload though. Georgina conceded, “Some days you’re a little more tired than you normally might be but I do feel very creative when I’m pregnant. I love tapping into that energy because I think that’s what my whole physical being is about at this time.”

And as she continues to create flawless frocks for grown-ups, Georgina hasn’t ruled out having a kids line at some point. She revealed, “I would love to one day, but I don’t know whether I will be any time soon.”

So if she had to choose one Project Runway competitor to design some duds for tots, Georgina noted, “Maybe Uli because she has that sense of whimsy that would be great. I’m thinking girls because I have a girl. So I think she would make really cute little baby clothes.”

Who knows, maybe her own daughter will contribute to the Marchesa line some day. Fashion is one of her little girl’s hobbies. Georgina remarked, “Being a two year old, running, drawing on everything, sticking things on everything. She’s like a little Tasmanian devil running around. She loves being at the office… going through all the fabrics and everything. She loves fashion already. She strokes the dresses and goes, ‘Beautiful dress, Mommy.’”

Yet even though Georgina has an eye for fashion and an in depth knowledge of carrying baby weight, she wouldn’t dare to give advice to the world’s most famous mommy to be — Kate Middleton. Georgina stated, “I couldn’t advise Kate. She’s such a stylish girl and she always gets it right.”

After all, pregnant or not, choosing the right outfit is a very subjective matter. As Georgina explained, “It depends on your body type. It’s like dressing — your body changes so much and everybody changes differently. So it really is a very personal thing and you just have to go with what your comfortable with. You have to embrace it. You enjoy it. It’s a few months of your life and it’s a special time of your life so I think just enjoy.

In the meantime, her heart goes out to the Duchess, “I just hope she’s feeling better, poor thing. As being pregnant myself I just can’t even imagine what a nightmare that must be. I hope she’s concentrating just on getting a lot of rest right now.”

Tune in to Project Runway: All Stars every Thursday night at 9 p.m. EST/8 p.m. Central. And watch Project Runway Spotlight: Marchesa on December 20 at 10 p.m. EST/9 p.m. Central on Lifetime.
