Little Miss Sunshine: The Musical?

The list of movies turned into Broadway musicals seems endless these days. There have, of course been major successes like Sunset Boulevard and The Lion King. And then there was mother of them all, Mel Brooks’ The Producers – the movie about a musical that was turned into a musical… and then became a movie again.

And then there are the flops. The Wedding Singer, Dirty Dancing, and Footloose all come to mind.

So as word breaks that the indie darling Little Miss Sunshine will be making its way to the small screen, we have to wonder where it will fall. On one level the comedy about a family in need of some serious bonding and the absurdity of children’s beauty pageants, seem like a perfect fit.

But how will they work around the mute-by-choice Dwayne? And do we really want to hear a production number about Marcel Proust? Sounds like a toe tapper.

But we’re always hoping for the next big Broadway hit. So we’ll sit back and wait for the show’s debut next February at the La Jolla Playhouse in California.
