We’re Leery of Mr. Sunshine’s Premiere

Hmm… tonight’s the night. Matthew Perry returns to network television. He tried once before after Friends went off the air. And we admit, we were big fans of Studio 60 on The Sunset Strip. The fact that it never found an audience and was canceled after 20 episodes is really no indication of the quality of the show. It was smart, funny and, unfortunately, left a lot of really interesting storylines hanging.

But we have to admit we don’t hold out a lot of hope for
Mr. Sunshine. We’ll be 100% honest to say that we have not yet seen the full pilot. But we feel like we’ve seen enough to get the gist. Perry plays the self-involved manager of a sports facility.

The thing that scares us most is the glimpses that we’ve had of the usually flawless Allison Janney. Sadly she seems like she’s chewing up the scenery in the snippets we’ve seen of her Mr. Sunshine performance.

Don’t get us wrong, we’d love to see Perry succeed. We’re thrilled that Matt LeBlanc is getting a chance to rebound from Joey with his new Showtime series Episodes. We are huge fans of Lisa Kudrow’s Who Do You Think You Are? And if we run out of good TV to watch, we’ll occasionally give Cougar Town a go. Heck, if Gunther had a show we’d probably check it out.

So we’ll check out Mr. Sunshine when it premieres tonight at 9:30 p.m. EST/8:30 p.m. Central on ABC.
