If you’re
having withdrawals from your Top Chef: Just Desserts, have we got a tasty treat
for you. The documentary Kings of Pastry is out on DVD and it is delicious. The
film by iconic filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker and his partner Chris Hegedus takes
viewers to the pâtissier
Olympics – les Meilleurs Ouvriers de France.
Every
four years the finest pastry chefs in the world are invite to compete for the
title of Best Craftsman in France. In Kings of Pastry 16 chefs compete, but not
all will survive the intense three day cook-off unscathed. The road to
achieving the designation of MOF is brutal. There are shattered sugar
sculptures, crumbled cookies and lots of grown man tears.
Even if you think you don’t like cooking shows or that baking is for pansies, give this doc a try. You’ll be surprised just how long you can dangle on the edge of your seat over a little bit of puff pastry and a wedding cake.
