The Everyday App: Might Show You More Than You’re Ready to See

Warning: This app is not for the faint of heart. Maybe if you start out as a teen, the thought of seeing your face evolve from day to day sounds fascinating. Or maybe this is a tech tool you’d like to turn on your ever-growing toddler to generate precious memories — the modern equivalent of drawing height marker lines on the doorframe. But once you hit middle age you might want to take a deep breathe before you commit to the Everyday app.

Here’s the gist of it. All you have to do is take a picture of yourself every day on your iPhone. There’s a built in adjustable grid that helps you line up each snapshot that you take. Next you just make a time-lapse movie of the pics and voila you’ll age right before your very eyes.

You can even set a handy dandy reminder on your phone so you don’t skip a day. The Everyday app might be a painful reminder of your ever-present wrinkles, but it also might do you some good. As one user named jonsmac commented on the official iTunes preview page, “Using it to track my diet progress (or lack thereof) It's working, the app anyway. Diet, not so much.”

Visit the Everyday website for more info — they’re the masterminds behind the app.

The Rockin’ Band Name Generator App

Everybody knows how to come up with their porn name by this point. You take the name of your childhood pet and pair it with the street you grew up on. We would be Chopper Ellsmore incase you’re wondering. But if you’ve been searching for a new name for your rock group, have we got a handy tool for you — the Band Name Generator App.

The possibilities are truly infinite given the 700 million-word vocabulary that the app has. And the cost will suit any emerging rock star’s budget – it’s free.

Our favorites so far our “Mineable Infirmary,” “Fizziest Bargain,” “Euphoric Sponge” and “Scared Headless.” And if you like part of your musical moniker but aren’t completely satisfied, you can double click on the text to call up the iPhone keyboard and make any changes you like.

We could easily get sucked in for hours so we try to limit our band name searches to long lines in banks and grocery stores. After all, we’re in no rush. Not only don’t we have a band, it’s going to be a long time before we learn how to play the guitar.

To download Band Name Generator visit the iTunes app store.

Get Your Mix Tape Groove On

Kumar303 Are you an old school audio file who’s reluctantly joined the digital age but still pines for the days of fast forward and rewind? Well have we got an app for you — the Stereolizer will transport your soul back to the ‘80s while keeping your feet firmly planted in 2011.

Here’s how it works. The app plays on an iPad and looks like an old fashioned hi-fi system. There’s a tuner, equalizer and even a cassette deck. It gives you free access to over 6,000 radio stations around the world.

You can preset up to 30 stations and record the transmissions with a built in digital recorder. But true to the apps retro flair, users can make digital “cassette tapes,” which have the added contemporary ability of labeling, deleting and playing back that are way more user friendly than your high school break up mix tape.

You can download the app from the iTunes store or by visiting http://stereolizer.com.

QRANK Rules

We’ve been slow to warm to some offerings of modern technology. We entered the smart phone arena a little bit late and the whole fascination with apps, eludes us. We don’t get the concept of earning worthless imaginary points just for going to a restaurant. Granted we’re in the camp that won’t pay for an iPhone application, so it’s not surprising that we’ve been underwhelmed by the experience — until now.

Someone recently turned us on to QRANK, the addictive trivia app. Here’s the drill. Each day you get to take a free quiz. You choose 15 random questions out of the available 20 from the categories of the day. There are seven areas of expertise in total Entertainment, Sports, Science & Nature, Literature, History & Place, Business & Government and Life. Each question has a value of 200, 400 or 1,000 points and there are bonuses to be scored along the way.

If you see a little leaf on the question mark icon, you’ll know that it’s fresh — pulled directly from the headlines of the day. Once you get sucked into QRANK, you’ll find that you’re following the news a bit more closely.

Plus the only thing better than feeling smart, is feeling superior. QRANK rates your performance against everyone else that plays in your local area, state, nation and around the globe. Plus you can see how you stack up against your friends — and, really, isn’t being smarter than the guy in the cubicle next to you what gets you through the tough days at work?
Check out QRANK in your smart phone App store or on Facebook.

Save Gray Powell: The Guy Who Lost the iPhone

Here’s one of those names that you’ve never heard before but will inevitably be a Trivial Pursuit answer… Gray Powell. He’s the Apple software engineer who left his iPhone 4G prototype in a beer garden in Redwood, California. Doh!

March 18 was the fateful night. That’s when Gray had a few steins of beer and left the extra top secret cell phone on a bar stool at the Gourmet Haus
Staudt. But who can blame him? It was his 27th birthday, so he had a couple of drinks, and happened to breech Apple security in the worst possible way. Apparently the company is so paranoid they black out the conference room windows and chain some prototypes to desks, so we’re not sure how this could actually happen.

So while the 2006 North Carolina State University grad, drowns his sorrows in yet more brew at the Gourmet Haus, supporters are trying to give him a helping hand. They've built a brand new Facebook page and set a very public goal of having 1,000,000 fans by the weekend.

They might pull it off. It's already up to 7,395 Likes (that’s the new Facebook terminology for those of you who haven’t been there lately). And it’s growing steadily. It's funny, too. The personal info reads:

“Location: Anywhere away from Steve” (that would be Jobs to you un-Apple friendly readers) and “Phone: Lost it :(”

Hey, you’ve got to have a sense of humor if you’re going to try to parlay an egregious mistake into a media frenzy.

So just like when Conan O’Brien was losing his Tonight Show job, fans are coming to Gray’s rescue with a slew of Save Gray Powell Facebook pages. Of course, if you remember correctly, the Facebook thing didn’t help Conan keep his job. But maybe if Powell suffers a similar fate, Coco can get him a job at TBS.
