Win a Copy of BBC America's Life
We’re not really nature show people unless there’s some kind of primate featured prominently (and if said ape should speak, all the better). But we were surprisingly captivated by the recent BBC America series Life
The 11-part documentary was narrated by force of nature, Oprah Winfrey, and captured breathtaking footage shot over a period of 3,000 days, across every continent. The series presents 130 incredible stories from the frontiers of the natural world, and details the extraordinary tactics that plants and animals have developed to stay alive, overcome challenges, and push the boundaries of behavior. And yes, there was a monkey or two.
If you missed it, don’t despair. On June 1st the series will be widely released and available at major retailers on both DVD and Blu-ray (retail value: $59.99), and will include never-before-seen “deleted scenes” bonus features, and the 11th episode entitled, “The Making of Life.” And we’re happy to announce we have a DVD copy to give away to one lucky winner. Click here to find out how to enter and read official rules.
Here’s just a little taste of what you can win:

So You Think You Can Dance Off to Great Start
The show is going through some serious changes this year. First off, the Hot Tamale Train has left the station for good. Mary Murphy is no longer with the series. We're sure her fellow judges' ears will be happy to hear the news.
Instead Mia Michaels joins Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman as the third permanent judge. We are actually pleased with this choice, although we will miss seeing her choreography. And we intend to watch with a box of Kleenex nearby, since both Mia and Adam are big cry babies. In just the first night they were driven to tears two times (that we saw on camera).
But the biggest change of the season is that only ten contestants will graduate from Vegas to the live shows. And instead of being paired with another contestant, they will dance with an all-star cast of past and present So You Think You Can Dancers. We're more than excited to have tWitch, Neil, Mark, Lauren, and Dominic back in our living rooms.
This big change up insures that only one contestant per week will be cast off and no one can be dragged down by a partner's performance. It promises to be an exciting season.

This Week's Inspirational Pop Culture Moments
We finally said aloha to Lost
, which went out with a message of hope. America Ferra joined the list of celebs building schools. And two famous Brad Whitfords collided. Here are this week's most inspirational pop culture moments.
Lost Goes out with a Message of Hope
This week the series Lost came to an end and viewers everywhere finally realized that the characters on the deserted island weren’t the ones who didn’t understand what had been going on all this time… we were.
Sure, the producer’s answered some questions but they left a whole lot open for water cooler debate. For example, where did that polar bear come from and when, in fact did all the castaways die. Was it at the point of impact? Or did each meet their own demise at different points along the journey? Was the island purgatory? Was it hell? Or was it the gate of heaven?
As confused as we might have been for the last six years, and on Sunday night about a lot of things, we walked away with this one inspiring concept. We love the idea that when we die (God-forbid), we will find ourselves in a parallel universe, and when we touch our missing loved ones, our joint experiences on Earth will come back to us in a flash of memory leading to ultimate peace. Sounds like a very pleasant afterlife to us.

Matthew Morrison and Jessalyn Gillisig on Glee's Love Triangle
There are lots of twisted love triangles on Glee
. There's the classic Finn-Quinn-Puck. The newer Finn-Rachel-Quinn. And, of course, there's the mother of them all: Terry-Will-Emma.
Personally, we're rooting for April to clean herself up completely, come back and sweep Mr. Shu off his feet. Their duets are just too good to pass up.
At a recent event that we filmed for the Archive of American Television, we asked two of the corners of the Glee
love triangle (Matthew Morrison and Jessalyn Gilsig) how'd they'd like to see things work out. Check out their very different answers.

Jillian Michaels' the Master of Metabolism
Photo by Pop Culture Passionistas, 2010
One of the perks of being a “blogger” is that every once in a while you get free stuff. We haven’t been inspired to talk about some of the water bottles or pads of paper we’ve received (although we have to admit we love a good pen).
But we recently received a copy of Jillian Michaels' new tome The Master Your Metabolism Cookbook
So we kind of brushed aside the recipes from the toughest trainer on The Biggest Loser
What we didn’t expect was how tasty all the recipes are. We’re addicted to the Chicken Stir Fry with Asparagus, Red Pepper, and Spinach (page 118) and we find ourselves craving the Roasted Russet Fries (page 230). And, really, who knew brown rice could taste so good?
So we think we’ll make ourselves some Chocolate-Cinnamon Frozen Banana Pops (page 242), and pull a TV tray up to the screen on Tuesday, June 1 at 10:00 PM, to watch the new NBC show Losing it with Jillian Michaels.

The Biggest Loser's Koli Palu was a Sore Loser
When America votes for someone else over you, it's got to hurt. Especially after having weight and self-esteem issues all your life. So it must have been hard for Koli and Daris to wait and see which of the two America chose to be in the final three.
When the dapper pink pants-clad Koli punched and growled his way through the life size photo of his former self, he said to The Biggest Loser
For the rest of the evening, and despite winning the $100,000 At-Home Prize, Koli pouted like a sore loser, barely speaking when spoken to. After beating out Darrell and Sherry for runner-up status, all he had to say was, "I just want to go home and be with my family." A nice sentiment if only he had said it without a scowl on his face.
Sadly for Koli, if he had come across as a little more likable, he may have made it into the final three. Had that happened he would have taken home first place with the highest percentage of weight loss at 53.35%.
But enough about pouty, sore losers. Let's talk about triumphant Biggest Losers. Would anyone have thought that the heaviest guy in the house, weighing in at 526 pounds, could ever win the title? Mike lost 50.19% of his body weight, dropping a total of 264 pounds. And while his journey hit some rough patches of self doubt and frustration, he emerged as half the man he used to be sporting a bejeweled skull belt buckle around his now svelte waist.
A few other highlights in case you missed it:
- Daris (who had never kissed a girl before coming to the ranch) now has a beautiful blonde girlfriend, Heather.
- Erik (the Season 3 contestant who regained all the weight) is back down over 150 pounds.
- Shay (the Season 8 player and the heaviest women to ever compete) lost another 52 pounds and gained a $52,000 check from Subway — which she can double if she runs a marathon by year's end.
- O'Neal (who used to walk up stairs like a two-year-old, with both feet landing on each step) skipped down the stairs to show off his new bod.
- Sherry continued the pink lady streak of major transformation from chubby housewife to downright skinny, hot mamma.
- Sam and Stephanie, continuing The Biggest Loser matchmaking streak, are now an item, living healthfully ever after.
Bryan Batt on His Broadway Career
Part Three of Our Four Part Interview with Bryan Batt
Most people know Bryan Batt as the closeted ad exec, Salvatore Romano, on Mad Men
. But long before the cigarette-smoke filled '60s drama, Bryan was belting out tunes on Broadway. From Starlight Express
to Cats
to Beauty and the Beast
, Bryan has had many adoring fans on the Great White Way over the years.
He talks a lot about his theater career in his new book She Ain't Heavy She's My Mother
. We spoke with him more in depth about a few of his roles, his mother's involvement in his career, and the heavy duty star who kick started his career.

The Cast of Glee on Themed Episodes
Thee afterglow of the Madonna themed Glee episode
is gone tonight's Lady Gaga-centric show isn't wall to wall Gaga. So we can't help but wonder, should the series keep doing their usual mix of Broadway show stoppers, classic rock anthems, and power pop ballads? Or should they kick off next season with another celeb-centric show?
Personally, we'd love a David Bowie
or Kinks
hour (just imagine Mr. Shu singing Young Americans
or a Rachel and Finn Waterloo Sunset
duet). At a recent event we filmed for the Archive of American Television, we had a chance to ask the cast what their dream themed show would be. Here's what they had to say.

You Really Need to Hear The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart
Last week marked the 20th Anniversary of the "Newhart" series finale. But Bob Newhart achieved an even bigger landmark this year. He's been making people laugh for five decades.
While most of us think of him as the star of two of TV's greatest shows of all time, The Bob Newhart Show
and Newhart
, Bob started his showbiz career as a stand-up comic. In fact, he holds the distinction of being the only comedian to ever win the Album of the Year Grammy award. And he deserves that honor, too.
You say you've never heard The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart
? Well, in the words of Bob's version of Mark Antony, "Friends, Romans, country men, I got something to tell ya." You must hear this record.
In fact, stop reading this blog and click here and buy a copy on Amazon right now
(then come back and finish reading).
Okay, you're back, good. Now find 32 minutes to sit back and enjoy this comedy classic without any interruption. You'll hear the behind-the-scenes story of Abe Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and find out how driving instructors put their lives on the line every day. And, most importantly, you'll laugh. Hard.
Here's what Bob told the Archive of American Television about his award winning debut album.

Happy Anniversary Bob Newhart
On May 21, 1990 the final episode of Newhart
aired. Not only was it a fitting sendoff for the hysterical series, it gave a major nod to Bob's previous hit sitcom The Bob Newhart Show
.
Over the years, the show has earned the distinction of being called the greatest series finale of all time. And TV Guide ranked in among the Top 100 Most Memorable TV Moments of All Time alongside The Beatles performance on The Ed Sullivan Show
and JFK's funeral.
It's not the only anniversary Bob is celebrating this year. 2010 marks his 50th year in show business, which will be memorialized with sold out celebration at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on June 1st.
Honor Bob today. Buy a Newhart
DVD (the first season is available) or pick-up his 1960 hilariously funny album The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart
(the only comedy recording to ever win the Album of the Year Grammy).
In the meantime, watch this clip from the Archive of American Television and see what Bob has to say about the legendary Newhart finale.

This Week's Inspirational Pop Culture Moments
Celebs were spreading the good vibes this week. A Desperate Housewives
Eva Longoria Is “Making a Difference”
This week NBC Nightly News was turning the spotlight on celebrities who are “Making a Difference.” It’s actually fairly hard to throw a stick in Hollywood without finding a star with a foundation that has their name on it. But some have really personal reasons for joining the fight for a particular cause.
Such is the case with Eva Longoria, a glamorous TV actress with an NBA All-Star husband, Tony Parker. But when the Desperate Housewives' cameras stop rolling and the paparazzi are done snapping photos, Eva is grounded in a very deep connection with her family – especially her oldest sister.
Lisa Longoria was born intellectually disabled. While some siblings might find that an overwhelming struggle, Parker has always viewed it as a blessing. She explained to NBC, “I always said Lisa’s my hero. And in growing up just seeing the challenges she’s faced and how she faces them with such a beautiful spirit and optimism and amazing strength.”
To honor her sister, Longoria founded the charity Eva’s Heroes. Among its events and activities, the organization offers a very special program near Corpus Christi, Texas. Eva’s Heroes Executive Director Christiane Perkins-Garcia described the opportunity for kids near Corpus Christi between the ages of 14-21, “I saw the need for just a fun place for kids to go while Mom and Dad are still at work. But in a supervised and safe setting where we have staff trained to handle the special needs that are students have.”
To learn more about Eva’s Heroes visit their website and click here to see the other celebs like Ben Affleck, Sally Field, and Usher who are “Making a Difference” in the NBC Nightly News series.

Rip Taylor Reminisces It Ain't All Confetti
Photo by Pop Culture Passionistas, 2010
Tonight we had one of the most unique experiences two people could have at the theater when we saw Mr. Rip Taylor's one man show It Ain't All Confetti.
We know the Prince of Pandemonium as the confetti throwing comedian who used to make our mother laugh so hard she jiggled uncontrollably with tears welling up in her eyes. We loved the Master of Mayhem, too, as he galavanted around the stage on The Mike Douglas Show
Taylor kicked off Confetti with a barrage of classically silly one-liners ("I was reading the obituaries and everybody died in alphabetical order today"). And then launched into a string of prop jokes (including a honking shoe horn) that made our sides ache.
Then the show took a dramatic turn. Rip took off his toupe and exposed both the dark and illuminating moments of his life story. He delved deep into tales of childhood abuse, run-ins with celebs like Jackie Gleason, and the amazing circumstances that led to one of the most glittering careers in comedy history.
Along the way we were reminded how groundbreaking Taylor's routines were. Long before Andy Kaufman sang along to the Mighty Mouse Theme Song, Rip was pantomiming to Japanese records in a Chinese restaurant in Tokyo. Before Carrot Top ever opened a trunk, Rip had them rolling in the aisles with visual gags like pantyhose (underwear attached to a garden hose) and cocaine (Coke cans stuck on a walking stick).
He worked everywhere from strip joints to the The Ed Sullivan Show
But most of all, Confetti is about the love of performing, the comfort of the spotlight, and the joy of laughter.
Among the many treats we'll savor was that Laugh In
It Ain't All Confetti runs through May 30 at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, California, 5269 Lankershim Boulevard, North Hollywood, CA 91601. For tickets call 818-508-4200 or visit the El Portal website at elportalthatre.com.

Parks and Recreation on Punk Ass Book Jockeys and Guest Stars
We got a chance to see the cast of Parks and Recreation twice in the last few weeks. Here's what Amy Poehler (who plays Leslie Knope), Aziz Ansari (who plays Tom Haverford), and Executive Producer Michael Schur had to say about the amazing cast, Leslie's optimism, guest stars, and punk ass book jockeys.
Q: It seems like you have the perfect cast. How much of it was finding the perfect actors and how much of it was writing for the actors you cast?
MICHAEL: The cast was great I think maybe, before the show was great. You have the script, you have the idea that's poignant, then somebody comes along and brings so much of their own life to the character and you try to incorporate it and it becomes much more alive. It takes time sometimes. I think that right now your character's so much cooler, Amy, because of the stuff you've brought to it… It's like practice makes perfect… or practice makes better. I won’t say perfect.
Q: Has the changing landscape of TV affected how you write the show?
MICHAEL: All you can really do is get a bunch of funny people and good writers and try to write what you think is good television and the style that I literally learned from Greg on The Office
AMY: You mention that our characters are three-dimensional and it made me think that maybe NBC should promote our show as being 3D… but you wear glasses over your heart.
Q: Have you had any reaction from people in actual government that stop you when seeing you at an airport?
AMY: Yeah. All the time. In fact, we did a really fun Q&A, and we had some people from local governments come in. One of the things they say, "You guys really nailed it how everybody hates the library." Funny. "They think they're so great and always get whatever they want." And a couple people showed up with shirts quoting a line from the show that says "Punk ass book jockeys." That's what we called the library.
MICHAEL: We have gotten a fair amount of feedback. It's funny because, you know, at this point -- and this is the way we always intended it -- it was always like their work setting is good to generate stories and it's interesting and it's a world that hasn't been too overdeveloped in the TV landscape. But now we just think of them as characters, and we think a lot more about their personal lives and their work lives and things like that. It's the way it should be, and it's always really funny when someone comes up and quotes some incredibly specific thing. It was the thing we literally made up... And it's very funny to see. There's a group of people in the world who are watching the show with a very different lens than the average viewer, which is great. The more the merrier.
Q: Can you talk about this latest storyline development for the character of Leslie?
AMY: Well, I think the struggle throughout the series, frankly, is for her to not become cynical. We always talked about the fact that she starts out so incredibly optimistic and that she realizes how hard it is to get the smallest things done. I think the series is about trying to make changes without becoming cynical. This is a tough time for her in terms of just trying to actually keep the department together and having to put aside bigger plans for the immediate fixing of -- and also just the fact that, like most local governments, there's no money. In fact, Adam and I have a scene where he shows us what departments are ahead of us in terms of what's important, and the parks department is really low.
Q: Do you have any guest stars planned for next season?
AMY: Aziz is in charge of casting this Thanksgiving year, right? Who is going to come on?
AZIZ: I've been really pushing for more of those old-school one TV show crossing into another TV show. In one episode that I pitched, there's a serial killer running around in the park. Who happens to drop by? A little guy known as The Mentalist
And then there's an episode that I pitched where we meet Tom's brother, and his name is Chandler Bing. Ring a bell?
MICHAEL: Matt Perry passed, by the way.
AMY: He said no.
AZIZ: His brother's name is Joseph Tribiani. Ring a bell?
AZIZ: Wait. Matt LeBlanc passed as well.
MICHAEL: His name is Darmish.

Salma Hayek's Frida Flaw
It's hard to think of the stunningly beautiful actress Salma Hayek having even a tiny physical flaw. After all, the Mexican-born beauty has been on People magazine's Most Beautiful people list more than once. She's been named Glamour magazine's Woman of the Year (2001). And a 2007 poll ranked her the sexiest celebrity (out of a possible pool of 3,000 famous men and women).
But the Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant star recently spoke out about a beauty problem she brought on herself - her mustache.
In 2001, Hayek produced and starred in the film Frida about the legendary artist Frida Kahlo. Feeling she would be able to accurately recreate the character's signature look with fake facial hair, Hayek actually started shaving her upper lip.
Now she says, she constantly has to wax her upper lip to keep the thick, dark, bristly hairs away. That seems like a lot of work to us. After marrying her baby daddy, Francois-Henri Pinault, in 2009, isn't Salma rich enough to look into a more permanent hair removal solution?
But all that said, we'd rather look like Salma Hayek with a mustache than just about any other starlet without one - any day, any time.

Our Picks for the New Fall Line Up (So Far)
Well news of the fall schedules for the major TV networks are rolling in and it’s a lot to process. Shows like Law and Order
and Heroes
have been canceled. Series like The New Adventures of Old Christine
might get scooped up by other networks. And megastars like Charlie Sheen have found it in their hearts to take a boatload of cash to keep their shows afloat a little bit longer.
We’ve sorted through the first wave of announcements and here are a few things we’re looking forward to:
ABC
Mr. Sunshine – The last time Friends
’ Matthew Perry tried a TV return was in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip
with West Wing alum, Bradley Whitford. We actually loved the show, which was yanked way too soon and left us with a lot of unanswered questions. Perry’s giving it a go once again with yet another West Winger, Allison Janney (fresh off a bizarre appearance in Lost). We can only hope that we like Mr. Sunshine as much as Studio 60, and that it lasts a lot longer.
FOX
The Good Guys – Perry’s old co-host Bradley Whitford is back on TV this fall in the The Good Guys with Colin Hanks (Tom’s son). If it sounds familiar that’s because just like Glee
, Fox is giving potential fans a sneak peak at the show tonight at 8:00 PM. If you like it, take a deep breath, you’ll have to wait a few months before new episodes air.
Running Wilde – Fox will also be bringing Arrested Development’s Will Arnett back to prime time. The new sitcom, co-created by Development’s Mitch Hurwitz, is about a Job Bluth-like narcissist. We’re looking forward to having Arnett back. But does Keri Russell have the comedic chops to go head-to-head with Arnett?
THE CW
One Tree Hill
– We don’t feel guilty about most of the TV shows we watch, although many people would consider a lot of our intake to be guilty pleasures. We can hide behind the fact that “we don’t want to do it, we have to do it,” when we really just like a whole lot of what other people would consider bad TV. But we have to admit that as grown women, we feel like we usually need to sneak around to watch One Tree Hill in order to avoid the embarrassment. But we’ve finally decided to come clean today and say that we’re happy it’s been renewed for yet another season.
NBC
The Paul Reiser Show – We’re very happy to hear that Paul Reiser is coming back to TV playing, Paul Reiser. It’s been way too long since Mad About You and we’re ready to see what he has to offer this time around.
The Rockford Files – But the best news of the Fall announcements so far is about a show that will not be on the schedule – The Rockford Files. Frankly, we were relieved to hear that the remake was not picked up. No one will ever be able to walk in James Garner’s shoes let alone live in his Malibu trailer.
